Tucked in the alpine folds just above Chiavenna, Campanile Nero is not just a place to stay—it’s a place to slow down and truly experience the Italian life. Once a church built in the 12th century, it now stands beautifully restored as a vacation rental with 3 apartments for those seeking to experience the simplicity, comfort, and timeless Italian charm.
The so-called Black Bell Tower is all that remains of the Church of Saints Christopher and Pancras, first mentioned in Prata in 1176. The church, once used for Evangelical worship, was ordered to be demolished in 1628 by Bishop Lazzaro Carafino due to its severe state of decay. Only the Romanesque bell tower was spared, now standing as one of the few remaining examples of Romanesque architecture in the Valchiavenna region.
Its name Campanile Nero, meaning “Black Bell Tower,” comes from the dark color of the stone used in its construction. The building still watches over the valley like it did centuries ago. The Campanile has been lovingly renovated, blending original stonework and vaulted ceilings with warm modern design.
Here, you can wake up to the sound of birds, sip espresso in the sun, and watch the light shift on the surrounding mountains. Whether you're relaxing on the terrace, exploring nearby alpine trails, or venturing down to Lake Como for the day, the Campanile Nero is the perfect home base for those that want a quite, beautiful stay away from tourists but close enough to access everything you need.
Located just 5 minutes from Chiavenna and 25 minutes from Lake Como, Campanile Nero offers the best of both worlds: mountain serenity and easy access to Northern Italy’s cultural gems.
PLEASE NOTE: The Campanile is only accessible via foot and not accessible via wheelchair. We apologize for the inconvenience.

We are a cosmopolitan family from Vienna who have been living on the beautiful Lake Constance for several years. After seven enriching years of Michaela in Italy, we have not only learned to love the culture, but also made friends in Chiavenna for life. Thanks to our many years of experience in the region, we have excellent knowledge of the area and appreciate life between the lake and the mountains very much.
